Statement of Faith
We believe that the Bible is the true and eternal Word of God and that it consists of the 66 books historically recognized by Believers as the Scriptures (39 books of the Old Testament and 27 books of the New Testament).
We believe that the Scriptures are verbally and plenarily inspired by God. We also believe that inspiration extends to the purposeful divine selection of the individual words in the original languages. The Scriptures are therefore inspired, inerrant, and infallible.
We believe that the Scriptures constitute the completed revelation of God to mankind and that He is therefore no longer giving direct divine revelation to any person today.
We acknowledge that the Scriptures are our sole and final rule and authority for faith and practice as Christians and as a New Testament Church and the true basis for Christian unity.
We further acknowledge the importance of having God’s Word in our own language and believe that the translation of the Scriptures must be in direct correspondence to the original languages.
For the sake of uniformity and accuracy, only conservative translations that follow a formal equivalence method of translation shall be used for all public reading, preaching and teaching of the Mackenzie Highway Baptist Church. Such translations include, but are not necessarily limited to, the following: the King James, New King James, New American Standard, and English Standard Versions. 1 Corinthians 14:40
God – God the Father
We believe there is only one living and true God, manifested in three persons; the Father, the Son and the Holy Spirit, equal in every divine perfection and executing distinct but harmonious offices in the great work of redemption.
Deut. 6:4-6; Isaiah 45:22-23; Matt. 28:19; John 1:1; 1 Cor. 8:6
The Lord Jesus Christ – God the Son
We believe that the Lord Jesus Christ was conceived by the Holy Spirit and born of the virgin Mary. He is “God manifest in the flesh”. Jesus lived a life of absolute sinlessness and by His death He made a full and vicarious atonement for the sins of all mankind. His was not a martyr’s death, but was a voluntary substitute in the sinner’s place.
Isaiah 7:14; Matt. 1:18-25; 1 Tim. 1:15; 1 Peter 3:18
The Holy Spirit – God the Holy Spirit
We believe in the personality of the Holy Spirit, that He was active in the work of creation and is active in redemption, that He is the agent of the new birth and He seals, endows, guides, teaches, witnesses, sanctifies and helps the believer. This church does not hold to the charismatic view of the administration of the gifts of the Holy Spirit; rather, we hold to the cessation of all sign gifts, such as tongues, prophecy, healing, etc. We do not believe in a second baptism of the Holy Spirit which is essential in the charismatic view to an effective spiritual ministry, or in the speaking in tongues which is believed to be evidence of this second baptism.
Gen. 1:1-3; John 3:5-6; John 14:16-26; John 16:8-11; Romans 8:14-27; Eph. 1:13-14; Eph. 4:4-5
We believe Christ was begotten of the Holy Spirit in a miraculous manner; born of Mary, a virgin, as no other man was ever born or ever can be born and that He is both the Son of God and God the Son.
Isaiah 7:14; Matt. 1:18-23; Heb. 1:8
We believe the Scriptures teach that there is a personal devil who is “the god of this age, the prince of the power of the air” who seeks continually to frustrate the purposes of God and ensnare the sons of men. Even though Satan is still the god of this age, his doom was sealed on the cross and he will eventually be cast into the lake of fire where he will remain for all eternity.
Gen. 3:15; 2 Cor. 4:3-4; 2 Cor. 11:13-15; Eph. 6:10-20; Heb. 2:14; Rev. 12:9-11; Rev. 20:10
We believe in the Genesis account of creation as neither allegory nor myth. The Genesis drama is a literal, historical account of the direct, immediate creative acts of God in six literal twenty-four hour days. We absolutely deny any creation by the evolutionary process. We believe that God’s established law is that living things should bring forth only “after their own kind”.
Furthermore, man’s body, soul and spirit were a direct act of creation by God and not from any previously existing forms of life. Gen. 1:2; John 1:3; Col. 1:16-17
We believe that man was created in innocence, but by voluntary transgression fell in sin and by consequence all mankind became sinners. Gen. 3:1-6; Ecc. 7:20; Rom. 3:12-23
We believe the Scriptures teach that salvation of sinners is divinely initiated by the Holy Spirit and wholly of grace through the editorial work of the Son of God. It is wholly apart from works and is upon the sole condition of repentance and faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. In order to be saved the sinner must be born again, through faith in God’s Word, becoming the recipient of a new nature: that the great gospel blessing which Christ imparts to such as believe in Him is justification of divine righteousness solely through faith in the Lord Jesus Christ. The believer is completely justified and is in possession of a salvation that is eternally secure. He is “kept by the power of God through faith unto salvation”, which salvation is eternally his when he believes.
John 3:3-8; John 10:28-29; John 16:8-11; Acts 13:39; Acts 17:30; Rom. 5:1; Rom. 8:1; Eph. 2:8-10; 1 Peter 1:18-23
We believe sanctification is the divine setting apart of the believer unto God and is both instantaneous and progressive. Sanctification does not mean sinless perfection.
1 Cor. 1:30; 1 Cor. 6:11; Gal. 5:16-25; Eph. 5:25-27
We believe in righteous living and good works, not as the procuring cause of salvation in any sense, but as its proper evidence and fruits. As Christians therefore, we should keep the Word of our Lord, seek those things which are above, walk as Christ walked and be careful to maintain good works. We should accept as our solemn responsibility the duty and privilege of bearing the gospel to a lost world in order that we bear much fruit.
We must remember that a victorious and fruitful Christian life is possible only for those who have learned they are not under the law but under grace and who in gratitude for the infinite and undeserved mercies of God have presented themselves wholly to Him for His service.
John 14:23; John 15:16; Rom. 6:14; Rom. 12:1-2; Gal. 3:2-3; Gal. 5:16-26; 1 John 3:9-11
We believe in the unity of all true believers in the church, which is the body of Christ. This was established on the day of Pentecost and from then until the rapture, all true believers are added to the church by the baptism of the Holy Spirit.
This spiritual church organism is manifested through the local church which is a group of baptized believers associated by covenant, faith and fellowship of the gospel.
Acts 2:41-42; 1 Cor. 12:13; Eph. 3:1-6; Col. 1:18
We believe in only two church ordinances: Baptism and the Lord’s Supper.
Baptism is the immersion of a true believer in water in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit to portray his identification with Christ in His death, burial and resurrection to a new life. A person shall be scripturally baptized before becoming a member of this church. Previous unscriptural modes of baptism will not be acceptable. Matt. 28:19; Acts 8:38; Rom. 6:1-5
The Lord’s Supper is in commemoration of the body and blood of our Lord Jesus Christ which He offered on the cross on behalf of all sinners. This shall normally be served by the Pastor and those whom he has asked to assist. The frequency shall be to the Pastor’s discretion. Each of the congregation shall make their own determination as to whether they partake or not. The officiating officer shall give counsel before serving so everyone receives proper instruction. Acts 20:7; 1 Cor. 11:23-38
We believe the Scriptures teach separation in three distinct areas:
1. from worldly sinful habits
2. from religious apostates
3. from Christian brothers who are walking disorderly
As the children of God, believers are obligated to separate from all evil practices and any activity which is unclean and may lead to defilement of mind and/or body. Believers are forbidden in Scripture to take another believer to court or to take personal vengeance against anyone.
All ecclesiastical organizations which teach doctrine contrary to Scripture must be separated from. All spiritual gifts are to be used in a Scriptural manner only. Any person who calls himself a believer and yet walks contrary to God’s Word, and refuses to correct his ways when approached in a Scriptural manner must be separated from.
Matt. 18:15-17; Rom. 12:1- 2 & 18-21; 1 Cor. 6:19-20; Gal. 1:8-9;
Eph. 5:3-11; Phil. 3:15-17; Phil. 4:2; Col. 3:1-2; 2 Thess. 3:6-15;
1 Tim. 6:3-6; 2 Tim. 2:16-18; James 4:4; 2 John 9-11
We believe that all civil governments are appointed by God for the purpose of establishing order in society, as opposed to chaos. Our leaders are to be prayed for, honored and obeyed except in areas opposed to God’s Word.
Matt. 22:21; Acts 5:29; Rom. 13:1-7; 1 Peter 2:13-15
We believe in the bodily, personal, pre-millennial return of Jesus Christ. We believe that He will come before the seven year tribulation period to catch away His church, coming only in the air and that He will come with His church at the close of the tribulation to judge the living nations and to set up His kingdom on the earth.
Matt. 25:31-46; 1 Thess. 4:13-18; Rev. 19:11-21
The above articles of faith are not to be considered exhaustive. These doctrines are our basic tenets of faith as we understand the Scriptures teach them and therefore are binding upon us as believers.
